GMT Emezue at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland

On 7th April, 2025, GMT Emezue made a presentation at the “AI for Good in the Global South” Side Event, which was held during the 46th Session of the Meeting of the Steering Committee for the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

The event, which was jointly organized by Recreate, Access to Knowledge (A2K), and Fundacion Via Libre was held at the WIPO headquarters. The main objective of the event was not just to showcase the important strides made by Africa and Latin America in the field of AI, but also to discuss some of the ways scholars from these regions have been tackling some of the major challenges, including copyright and intellectual Property rights that they have been encountering in the AI ecosystem.

In her presentation, GMT Emezue suggested that the adoption of the “Data Farming” principle, which she and her colleagues successfully utilized during their NaijaVoices and VoiceAfrica projects, might bring about the necessary reversal of fortunes for the AI industry and eco system which many more voices are constantly joining the rise in the protest over the exploitative nature of the AI industry, big practitioners.
